Study of Public Awareness and Knowledge of Speech and Language Disorders in Qurayyat City, Saudi Arabia

Abstract
Public awareness and knowledge about speech and language disorders remain limited in many countries, particularly in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia. The aim of This study investigates public awareness and knowledge of speech-language pathology in Qurayyat City, Saudi Arabia. It also determines the level of knowledge of speech- language disorders that the public has. This study was carried out through a questionnaire. A total of 291 participants were surveyed about their knowledge of the field of speech-language pathology and of communication disorders via the WhatsApp platform. Information was collected based on participants’ age (ranging from 18–70 years), gender, qualifications and occupation, and whether they have children or not. The result indicated a moderate level of awareness and knowledge of speech-language disorders in Qurayyat, Saudi Arabia. Participants with the most accurate knowledge of speech-language pathology and communication disorders, mostly females with children, had bachelor’s degrees. Moreover, the results indicated a lack of familiarity with different types of communication disorders except for stuttering.
